A simple rule is to do a quick search on Glassdoor or Indeed and look for digital marketing specialist jobs posted recently. Look at the requirements, education, experience, skills, certifications, and other basic requirements that businesses in your preferred location ask for.

You need to have at least the following to become a digital marketing specialist:

  • A bachelor’s degree in a relevant field preferably a marketing or Digital Marketing Course
  • Work experience in digital marketing or related work experience
  • Strong communication skills
  • Familiarity with different marketing channels and fields
  • Familiarity with UX, HTML, designing, basic programming, CMS, and marketing tools.

Ask yourself: What you lack from the list above and start working on it. 

For example, if you don’t know CSS and HTML, a basic course will help you understand its ins and outs.

You need to work on your skills and certifications too as certifications help you cover your experience-related deficiencies. Needless to say, you need to have a strong digital marketing portfolio with proven case studies to become a specialist in the field.
